Does Psychotherapy Work?

Psychotherapy

Anyone who pays a professional for treatment or assistance with a problem wants to know ahead of time that the process will actually leave them better off than when they started. As a result, many clients approach psychotherapy sessions wondering “does it actually work?” Fortunately, psychotherapy does work for the large majority of people, especially in relation to certain specific mental health issues.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) also calls psychotherapy “talk therapy,” because conversations between the patient and therapist are the basis of the treatment. The goal is to eliminate or help the patient to control psychological symptoms so they can better function during their day-to-day routine. The APA lists the following as common issues where psychotherapy can help the patient better cope with life:

  • Medical illness
  • Facing the impact of loss
  • Dealing with trauma
  • Controlling anxiety
  • Handling clinical depression

In all of these circumstances and many others, additional therapies may be used, such as medication, neurofeedback, biofeedback, and brainspotting. Fortunately, the Brain Health Clinic specializes in brain mapping, a neurofeedback diagnostic tool that is especially helpful for selecting the therapy, or combination of therapies, that is most likely to assist the client.

Will Psychotherapy Help Me?

The American Psychological Association makes this statement regarding the effectiveness of psychotherapy: 75% of patients experience benefits from using psychotherapy, while only 20% of people improve without it. That represents a very significant difference! As with any therapy, the end results also depend on how the patient approaches the process and whether they participate fully in their sessions and the associated exercises.
