Mild Cognitive Impairment and Neurofeedback

MCI

Some memory loss accompanies aging and is not necessarily a sign of impending Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. In between the two states of ordinary memory loss and Alzheimer’s is actually a third category of memory decline called Mild Cognitive Impairment, or MCI. With MCI, your memory problems are greater than average for your age, but not indicative of a dementia diagnosis. Fortunately, the Brain Health Clinic can help you reverse mild cognitive impairment.

What Studies Show

Many studies indicate that neurofeedback is an effective therapy for MCI. Researchers in Israel conducted ten therapy sessions for a number of subjects, assessing their quality of memory before, at the conclusion, and thirty days after a five-week neurofeedback treatment. They found that the memory benefits lasted beyond the conclusion of the study sessions.

Scientists in Korea conducted a similar study with slightly different protocols. They used an eight-week period with 16 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes in total. Like the Israeli study, subjects showed significant improvement in memory function, These researchers even went so far as to suggest that neurofeedback “may have potential therapeutic applications to prevent the progression from MCI to dementia.”
